# Upgrades and backups

## Upgrades

Docker images use the `:latest` tag.

```bash
docker compose --project-directory . -f docker/docker-compose.yml -f docker/docker-compose.selfhost.yml pull
make up
```

Migrations run automatically and only go forward.

## Backups

The state you own is Postgres, Redis and both buckets. Backups are up to you.

> **Keep your secrets with your backups**
>
> Encrypted values in the database, such as stored OAuth tokens, are only readable with the same `BETTER_AUTH_SECRET` and `ENCRYPTION_PASSWORD`. Store both safely, next to your backups.
